The authors of this volume consider the period after 1989 to be essentially favourable for the Hungarian language and community in Transylvania. The former linguistic isolation between the motherland and the Hungarians of Transylvania disappeared, Romania´s EU accession has resulted in a more direct relationship with other languages of the world, and the freedom of language use in cyberspace has had a positive impact on the development of previously repressed registers. On the negative side, however, the disadvantaged legal status of the Hungarian language and community in Romania, and the legal declaration of the supremacy of the state language, has remained.
