Experimental Verification of the Reading Comprehension Intervention for the German Language as L3

Author(s): Eva Stranovská,Anikó Ficzere,Erzsébet Szabó / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: second foreign language; reading comprehension; intervention;

Aim. The main aim of the research was to verify the reading comprehension intervention program for the German language that builds on complex models of foreign language text comprehension while stimulating the cognitive, affective and social levels of reading. Methods. The respondents of the research were studying English language in their 3rd year in secondary schools in Slovakia. The data were collected with the didactic reading comprehension test for the German language (Hockicková et al., 2020). The research was conducted through a pre-test before the intervention program and a post-test after the intervention. The basic characteristics of the examined variables were described using descriptive statistics. A paired t-test was used to detect differences in reading comprehension before and after the intervention. Results. The results of the research confirmed an increase in German texts comprehension in each experimental group. A statistically significant difference in reading comprehension performance was not confirmed in the control groups without completing the intervention program. Conclusion. The reading comprehension intervention program for the German language at A2 level appears to be effective in the direction of increasing performance in reading comprehension of German texts. The intervention in German text comprehension is manifested in two simultaneous work practices, namely in the development of predictors and in working with different types of texts as well as different reading strategies.

Can History of Parasitic Diseases Increase Social Conservatism? Testing Behavioural Immune System Theory

Author(s): Wiktoria Jędryczka / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: Perceived infectability; parasites; social conservatism; behavioural immune system;

Aim. Using available data from previously published study the hypothesis that individuals with broader disease history are more conservative than those, who were infected less often in the past was tested. Methods. Publicly available database containing data regarding perceived vulnerability to disease, social conservatism and participant’s history of parasitic diseases was accessed. History of parasitic diseases, self-declared, consisted of nine commonly occurring in tropical areas parasitic diseases. In the study 9409 cases from 43 countries were analysed. Results. When controlling for participant’s age, sex, education level, wealth and perceived infectability, it was found, that broader disease history was a significant predictor of social conservatism. Additionally, it was found, that wealth and age were negative predictors of social conservatism. All obtained effects were relatively small, but significant. The results are discussed in the light of previous research. Conclusions. Individuals, who were in the past infected with parasitic diseases more often, were observed to be more conservative than people, who had suffered from these diseases less often.

Measuring the “Blue” Face of Narcissism: Psychometric Properties of Ukrainian Translation of the Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale in Non-Clinical Groups

Author(s): Iryna Kryvenko,Nataliya Pylat,Oksana M. Senyk / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: narcissism; vulnerable narcissism; HSNS; reliability; validity; psychometric properties;

Aim. Little research has focused on hypersensitive narcissism in Slavic countries. One of the reasons for that is the absence of suitable inventories. The present study aims to make the Ukrainian adapted translation of the Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale (HSNS) and to check for its psychometric properties in a non-clinical sample. Methods. To prepare materials, we first conducted a double-blind translation procedure with further linguistic analysis. The following two empirical studies to collect data for statistical analysis were then made. Results. The data shows adequate internal consistency and scale validity, as well as a three-factor structure (obtained with the principal components analysis [PCA]), in line with the theoretical background. However, the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Cronbach’s alphas analysis yield the unidimensional scale to be the best fit for the Ukrainian version. The data also support evidence for maladaptive social relationship patterns of people with high HSNS scores. Conclusion. We proved vulnerable and grandiose narcissism are qualitatively different phenomena and showed how a cultural context of narcissism manifestation may be reflected through social interactions and self-attitude. HSNS in Ukrainian is a reliable and valid tool for complex psychological personality research among non-clinical adult samples. Practical application. The proposed translation of the HSNS is adapted to be used for research in Ukrainian culture, with Ukrainian-speaking respondents and psychologists’ and psychotherapists’ clients.

Author(s): Larysa Petrenko,Oksana Pilevich,Olena Zelikovska,Natalia Doronina,Viktoriya Kupriyevych,Halyna Bilanych,Nina Solovey,Svitlana Isaieva,Hanna Selezen / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: cultural and educational environment; methodology; professional identity; theoretical model; college potential;

Aim. The purpose of the research is to develop and substantiate a theoretical model for the formation of a professional culture of finance students. Methods. The authors used a set of interrelated methods: comparative analysis, comparison and synthesis, appropriate for modelling professional culture as a pedagogical phenomenon, and functional-structural analysis for systematisation of the stages of building the professional culture. A theoretical model of professional culture has been designed and validated. This model consolidates research from studies of motivation, cognitive sciences, organisational behaviour, and values in educational and financial institutions and lays the foundations of finance students’ professional culture formation methodology. Results. The obtained results showed positive dynamics in the formation components (motivational, creative, organisational and axiological) of the theoretical model of professional culture development. Our findings confirmed that the cultural and educational environment encourages students’ engagement in learning, boosts the development of their motivational and semantic sphere, ensuring the implementation of individual learning trajectories. Conclusion. The complex of methods implemented evidences the educational, cultural, and innovative potential of the college for training and students’ personal and professional development. The structure of the professional culture development model for finance students has driven a reconsideration of the content of their professional training, generation and dissemination of novel methods and technologies. Practical implementation. The research has resulted in changes to the vocational training programmes for college finance students, the introduction of teaching methods for professional disciplines that proved their efficiency, and development of cooperation with banking institutions, financial and insurance companies.

Psychological Patterns in Sexual Relationships: Ukrainian Adaptation of the Multidimensional Sexual Questionnaire

Author(s): Anastasiia Shyroka,Tetiana Zavada / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: sexuality; Ukrainian-language adaptation, reliability; psychological tendencies; sexual relationships; validity;

Aim. Human sexuality is an important multidimensional subject for psychological research. However, the study of sexuality remains relatively closed for Ukrainian researchers, primarily due to a lack of valid and reliable measures of sexuality in general, and in particular, measures of psychological patterns in human sexuality. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to validate a self-report English-language tool, the Multidimensional Sexual Questionnaire (MSQ), for the Ukrainian language. Methods. A total of 1113 Ukrainian-speaking participants were administered the MSQ-UA. The MSQ-UA factor structure was measured using EFA and CFA procedures. Alpha and Omega estimates of internal consistency were calculated. The test-retest reliability was established in a five-week time period. The correlations of the MSQ-UA subscales with relevant psychopathology, personality measures and control statements were accomplished to prove the construct validity of the questionnaire. Results. Findings indicated that the MSQ-UA is an eleven-dimensional measure, which is almost identical to the original English-language version. Subscales of the MSQ-UA display acceptable excellent psychometric properties of internal consistency (Alpha and Omega within a range of 0.70 to 0.92). The test-retest reliability over the five-week period was appropriate (r=0.68-0.93). The MSQ-UA subscales demonstrated from moderate to high correlations with relevant measures, and the associations were absent or low in cases when criterion measures were irrelevant to the subscale. Conclusion. The MSQ-UA demonstrated appropriate psychometric properties and may be applied to assess a broad range of psychological patterns in sexual relationships in the Ukrainian-speaking population.

Author(s): Nadiia Levus,Viktoriya Hupalovska,Oleh Salamon,Yuliya Yurkiv / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: Brief Solution Focused Therapy; emotional disorders; cognitive impairments; behavioural disorders; people with disabilities;

Results. The following BSFT techniques proved to be the most effective in the work on emotional disorders: problem-free talk, compliments, resource questions and scaling. These techniques can be called the most emotional ones – the techniques that call for your emotions, replenish your psychological resource, help rebuild your emotional attitude to the situation, look at it from a different angle. BSFTbased psycho-correction and psychotherapy of cognitive impairments and behavioural disorders is longer and more fundamental. Effective techniques are goal setting, resource identification, and also there are special turning points, such as the technique of life analysis, which is a variant of scaling as a method, use of coping questions. Conclusions. BSFT-methods are effective in addressing different disorders – both partial (emotional, behavioural, cognitive) and more complex ones. The fact that BSFT does not focus on the negative emotional conditions, the problem and its causes, enables the depressive clients, grieving clients and clients experiencing loss to relatively fast discover their resources and start building plans, demonstrating how it is possible to optimize the process of overcoming complicated life situations.

Mapping out Liberating Traces of the Fun of Undisciplined Play: A Search for an Alternative Aesthetic in Graffiti

Author(s): Sohaib Alam,Farhan Ahmad,Sadaf Khalid,. Shubhi / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: graffiti; popular; popular culture; popular resistance; power; space;

Aim. The present study primarily engages with graffiti as a tactic of the weak who find pleasure in scandalising the dominant discourse. The prime focus here will be on the pleasure as resistance, on the construction of an alternative space into the dominant space, and on the multiple forms of evasive and resisting techniques through which the subordinate asserts their power. Thus, Graffiti can be read as a popular text, a signifying construct of potential meanings and pleasures for the subordinate. Concept. Conceptualised as the undisciplined play of the subordinate people that resists or evades hegemonic forces and a radical reimagining of the neo-liberal spaces, Graffiti has become a major expression of popular culture in recent times. The paper uses many such stances where the lateral thinking of the power helps to challenge the disciplinary discourses of the dominant. Results and Conclusion. The paper offers a popular reading of graffiti that opens up the way to escape control, scandalise top-down power and to assert bottom-up power at the micro-level. The real pleasure lies in scandalising the dominant discourse. Graffiti is read here as self-assertion of the marginalised who acquire public visibility and power through graffiti creation. Originality. The originality of the study depends on reviewing the manipulative actions of people in everyday lives and how this undisciplined play provides them with the opportunity to subvert the system and to escape social control. It supports the idea that the subordinate possesses transgressive deviation in relation to the everyday continuum.

Keywords: health literacy; information literacy; Internet; online health information; quality assessment criteria;

Aim. The aim of the survey was to find out how and why users of websites containing health information searched for information, how they feel about selected criteria for assessing the credibility of information, and what they are more likely to trust when they encounter a discrepancy between information from the website and from a doctor. Methods. An online survey of users of 4 health information websites, two of which are listed as trusted sites on MedLike. The respondents assessed 10 criteria for determining the trustworthiness of online information and websites by assigning a number of stars (5 stars = important). Results. The questionnaire was answered by 32,428 respondents (79.5% women, average age 47 years). The most frequently cited reasons for seeking information were their own health or illness (49%). Most respondents searched for information through an Internet search engine (66%). The importance of the criteria for selecting information did not differ significantly. The respondents gave the highest score (2.29) to the criterion of ease (I can easily find what I need). This was followed by consistency with information from the doctor (2.28). Conclusion. The respondents searched for information in the way described in the literature as most common (using a search engine) and tended towards a heuristic evaluation of online information and its sources (ease of information retrieval) and also appreciated if the information found concurred with information from a healthcare professional.

The Relationship between Humans and Animals in the Aboriginal Mythology through the Prism of Animal Studies

Author(s): Radosław Siewierski / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: Animals; people; Aboriginal mythology; Australia; myths;

Aim. The aim of this article is to analyse Aboriginal myths and discover the relationship between animals and humans in the beliefs of the indigenous Australians. The article attempts to explain how animals are described when compared to people and vice. Furthermore, the author endeavours to establish what the relationship looks like and how it is presented. Methods. As Aboriginal myths and mythologies have been evolving for hundreds and thousands of years, it is not possible to analyse every single myth. Hence, in order to narrow them down, only the myths presented by Alexander Wyclif Reed will be analysed. The analysis will be conducted from the perspective of Animals Studies, with a particular focus on the contemporary ecological views presented by a contemporary representative of an ecological turn and animal rights scholar, Peter Wohlleben. The analysis will focus on three main aspects: parenting/motherly love, instincts, feelings and emotions. Results. The analysis shows that animals were of the utmost importance in the Aboriginal everyday life and most of the time were treated on a par with humans. Just like the Aboriginal point of view, contemporary attitude to Animal Studies attempts to alter the view according to which animals are devoid of feelings and intelligence. Conclusions. Animals seem to have a crucial role in every aspect of Aboriginal everyday life, including religious and social. They were not perceived as lesser or worse; conversely, Aboriginals considered them to be as intelligent and significant as the Aboriginal people themselves.

Correlation Between Time Perspective and Defense Mechanisms of Ukrainian Students During the War

Author(s): Olena Lazurenko,Nadiya Tertychna,Natatliia Smila / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: time perspective; defense mechanisms; youth; war; traumatic experience;

Aim. The article is aimed at proving the hypothesis that there are significant correlations between the defense mechanisms and the perception of time perspective in young people under the conditions of war. Methods. The study was held in May 2022 with the involvement of students who were relocated to the west of Ukraine from the eastern regions due to active hostilities. The following research methods were used: survey; psychological testing (Life Style Index, Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory); statistic analysis. Results. The study shows that the most common defense mechanisms of young people during the war are: repression, projection and displacement. At the same time, men use the defense mechanism of projection more often than women, and women are more prone to regression. It is determined that young people during the war are the least oriented towards the future. Also, there are very few who would perceive the past negatively. Conclusion. The data obtained during the research indicate the need to develop a program of psychological support for young people during the war, which would allow: to develop awareness of one’s own experiences, defense mechanisms, ways of ecologically living through traumatic experience; to form a healthier attitude to time, which would include planning for the future at least for the short term and would contribute to increasing motivation for life and self-development.

“Should I Stay or Should I Go?” Relationships Between Emotion Regulation and Basic Needs Satisfaction of Parents Displaced in Ukraine and Abroad (During the First 6 Months of The Russian Invasion of Ukraine)

Author(s): Anastasiia Shyroka,Oksana M. Senyk,Tetiana Zavada,Olena Vons,Anna Kornadt / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: emotion regulation; displaced persons; parenthood; Russian invasion of Ukraine;

Aim. The ability to regulate emotions depends on many factors, but for displaced persons, the satisfaction of basic needs is likely to be among the most important. Therefore, this study aimed at determining the degree of basic needs satisfaction and their relationship with indicators of emotion regulation in parents displaced within Ukraine and abroad due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Methods. The study sample comprised of parents (98% of whom were mothers), aged 18-55, who fled the war from 23 different regions of Ukraine to the safer Ukrainian regions (N = 99) or abroad (N = 241). Participants answered questions about their demographics, basic needs satisfaction, and emotion regulation. Results. There was no significant difference between parents displaced in Ukraine or abroad in access to basic resources, conditions of accommodation, medical care and emotional support, but parents abroad had better access to employment and education of their children. Parents in both groups had positive (refocused on planning, put the situation into perspective) and negative (rumination) strategies of emotion regulation. Parents who had higher level of their basic needs’ satisfaction, scored higher on positive emotion regulation strategies and were less likely to experience emotion regulation difficulties. Conclusion. Basic needs satisfaction can be considered an important protective factor for displaced persons’ emotional regulation. The obtained results allowed drawing of conclusions only about people who were able to participate in the study. The problem of access to a broader target population is discussed.
