(RE)CONSIDERING GEOENGINEERING IN AN ETHICAL BIOCULTURAL FRAMEWORK

(RE)CONSIDERING GEOENGINEERING IN AN ETHICAL BIOCULTURAL FRAMEWORK

(RE)CONSIDERING GEOENGINEERING IN AN ETHICAL BIOCULTURAL FRAMEWORK

Author(s): Radu Simion / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2023

Keywords: environmental ethics; geoengineering; sustainability; biocultural ethics; environmental psychology;

In the perspective of biocultural homogenization and the increasingly prominent use of technology, environmental ethics faces new challenges. Development policies, governance, and economic factors impose new ways of understanding and managing coexistence. Phenomena such as pandemics, global warming, migratory phenomena, the expansion of urban and rural areas, and the development of large-scale monocultures show us that human agency, resources, the environment, and surroundings are increasingly intertwined, both physically and metaphysically, in an increasingly encompassing organism where the dissociation between the local and the global becomes difficult to achieve. With a wide range of actions and relationships, environmental psychology and ethics have the task of rethinking the relationship between cultural elements and the biosphere, in order to achieve a balance between sensibility, responsibility, and responsivity. In this article, I aim to illustrate that a biocultural ethical framework emphasizing socio-environmental justice, applied to geoengineering, not only promotes global socio-environmental sustainability but also recognizes the crucial significance of local ecosystems in climate regulation and biodiversity conservation. To do so, I will briefly present some theoretical elements related to the importance of environmental psychology in understanding the connection between individuals and the surrounding environment. Then, I will succinctly present the concept of the ”3Hs” and its implication on biocultural ethics, and subsequently integrate specific elements of biocultural ethics into the analysis of geoengineering ethics to illustrate the need for a perspective that takes this into account. Through this endeavor, I intend to emphasize the vital role of a holistic, multidimensional perspective that guides individual values and community policies towards sustainable practices, ensuring social cohesion and dialogue, respecting the coexistence of life forms, and protecting their habitats.

Keywords: bios; Thanatos; thambos; hybris; Sisyphus; Prometheus;

What is the role of unlimited punishment in a (so-called) limit culture? What is the point of narratives that tell of endless, futile labors and sufferings? Trying to find their role in a dimension that involves much more than an obvious “moralizing” contribution, in the manner of a satire, the unlimited punishment will be researched, by reference to bios and thanatos, at the intersection of public cult, blood sacrifices and mysteries from ancient Greece, looking for its source in civic religion as a punishment for wandering.

Keywords: history; historical time; logic of history; capitalism; traditional Marxism; Moishe Postone;

Whether we think history has a definite logic of its own, or is merely the emergent quality of an irreducible contingency – it is usually taken as granted that it the same way in all its course. This is the case with some philosophers who argue against a conception of history as having an inherent logic. In this paper I present Postone’s critical reexamination of Marxian categories and argue that based on his project, we can criticize the presupposition of the “sameness” of history. For although there is no transhistorically valid “logic of history”, something like it is constituted by the functioning of capitalism’s elementary categories.

THE NEXUS BETWEEN FOREIGN PORTFOLIO DIVERSIFICATION AND KINSHIP

Author(s): Erzsébet-Mirjám Socaciu / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2023

Keywords: international portfolio diversification; kinship; trust; financial literacy;

This study seeks to understand the effect of kinship tightness of a society on foreign portfolio diversification. Using data for 42 home investor countries and 44 destination countries for the period of 2004-2021, it is found that investors from more tight-knit kinship societies tend to have smaller proportion of equities invested abroad, thus holding sub-diversified portfolios. The enforcement of these tight kinship societies is based on shame and communal values fostering local monitoring practices which leads to the absence of cooperation and trust, thus reducing stock market participation. It is further shown that kinship tightness can be shaped by enhanced financial literacy, which in turn fosters international diversification. On the other hand, loose kinship societies can be viewed as trust-promoting alternative mechanisms where formal institutions are less effective.

UNCONVENTIONAL MONETARY MEASURES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: A CASE STUDY FOR CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

Author(s): Dorina Clichici / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2023

Keywords: COVID-19 pandemic; Central and Eastern Europe; central banks; unconventional monetary policy;

The COVID-19 pandemic had major negative repercussions on the countries from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), which experienced almost similar declines in the economy in 2020. Against this background, central banks from CEE initiated unconventional monetary policy measures aimed at mitigating the economic and social effects of the pandemic. The purpose of this article is to analyse the CEE central banks’ response to the pandemic crisis, i.e., the response of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Romania, and to unveil the particularities of the unconventional monetary policy adopted by these states. To achieve this goal, the article presents a chronology of the main decisions adopted by CEE central banks during the pandemic and the dynamics of these central banks’ assets. The main findings suggest that CEE monetary authorities, like major central banks, initiated the first measures to counter the negative effects of the pandemic on the economy in March 2020. All of them cut the key interest rate and injected liquidity through open market operations in order to support lending to the real economy. However, the magnitude of these measures was different depending on the economic and financial systems’ peculiarities. Moreover, not all of them initiated purchases of assets or new lending facilities.

INVESTIGATING STUDENTS’ BEHAVIORAL BIASES IN REGARD TO FINANCIAL DECISION-MAKING

Author(s): Réka Albert / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2023

Keywords: Herding behavior; Overconfidence; Mental accounting; Loss-aversion; Anchoring; Introspection; Financial knowledge;

The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors influencing the appearance of biases in the behavior of university students. The studied biases are herding behavior, overconfidence, mental accounting, loss-aversion, anchoring and introspection. Three main assumptions were formulated, one regarding the relationship between the biases and financial knowledge, another related to the impact of gender, and the third one presuming a possible explanatory power of the Cognitive Reflection Test results in relation with the heuristics. The findings present evidence regarding the significant influencing power of financial knowledge on the behavior of university students from Cluj-Napoca, suggesting that this aspect could be a possible solution in order to diminish the negative effects of some of the behavioral biases examined. Besides the importance of financial knowledge, the results emphasis the explanatory power of gender when considering the errors of herding, overconfidence, mental accounting and loss-aversion, showing that men tend to be more influenced by these errors. The third assumption proved to be false, indicating that the performance of students at the Cognitive Reflection Test does not have a great impact on the presence of the examined biases.

THE EFFECTS OF GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURE ON THE OUTPUT: A REAL BUSINESS CYCLE ANALYSIS FOR THE ROMANIAN ECONOMY

Author(s): Ştefan-Constantin Radu / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2023

Keywords: economic growth; real business cycle model; Romanian economy;

One of the most researched topics in macroeconomics is the development and implementation of Real Business Cycle models. This article presents a small Real Business Cycle model, which is built for the Romanian economy, with data from the 2nd quarter of 1995 through the 3rd quarter of 2022. The main aim of this analysis is to assess the historical influence of exogenous and government spending shocks on economic growth. In order to obtain accurate results, we implemented a Bayesian estimation technique for calculating the parameters of the model. The main findings indicate the significant exogenous shocks effect on the Romanian economy, and the way in which government spending had a positive effect on increasing economic growth for the period between the 1st quarter 2000 and the 3rd quarter of 2022.

Keywords: Dasein; primordial; projection; totality; ready-to-hand; present-at-hand; everydayness; potentiality; possibility;

It is misunderstood that tribal people have no proper awareness of phenomena of a thing. Perhaps it is for this reason that in any academic scholarship concerning tribal state of affairs, metaphysics in particular and philosophy in general has been dislocated from tribal enterprise. Their physical problems such as landlessness, hunger, poverty including liberation from these sufferings have been the age-old headlines in tribal studies. Many have miscalculated that tribal people solely rely on the objective revelation in defining reality without truly participating in it. In fact, tribal people suspend neither subjective nor objective affirmation; they keep harmonious relationship between the two. It is in the harmonious environment through being in the world that tribal identity has been acknowledged, and the objective truth has also been understood. Being-in-the-world (Dasein) as a methodology for doing tribal theology helps tribal in building authentic existence and in direction towards ontological theology.

Green supplier selection problems with data scaling and production frontier estimations in a DEA model

Author(s): Imre Dobos,Gyöngyi Vörösmarty / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2023

Keywords: supplier selection; data envelopment analysis (DEA); data scaling; production frontiers

Considering ecological issues in supplier evaluation and management alongside business considerations is getting more recognition among firms. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is one of those methods, which is frequently suggested by the literature to support management decisions. However, the data requirements of the method should be an important consideration. The literature often addresses the issue of desirable outputs and undesirable input as an important data related problem in case of the ecological use of DEA. This paper will present a new solution to manage these data problems along with connecting the evaluation of management criteria, environmental criteria and total cost aspects. The proposed environmental supplier selection problem is an extension of a former paper. The new model examines the effect of inventory related costs, such as EOQ costs of inventory holding or ordering costs on the selected supplier, extended with newly introduced scaled values of input and output indicators. The usage of scaled values is motivated by the problem of invariance to data alteration. In addition to the uncertainty of the data, the paper looks for a functional relationship between the input and output criterion values and the efficiency that can be assigned to them using DEA.

How to assess responsible digital citizenship? Economics students in the digital world

Author(s): Vivien Görög,Beáta Udvari / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2023

Keywords: responsible digital citizenship; digital transformation; cluster analysis

The 21st century is characterized by digital transformation, which affects economic processes and social life, and results in the parallel existence of life in both online and offline spheres. Thus, the concept of citizenship should no longer be restricted to its traditional understanding, but expanded to digital citizenship as well, and it should be adapted to the challenges of the 21st century. Thus, we need to analyze responsible digital citizenship, and our research is aimed at the question of how to assess this. As a pilot, we conducted a survey among university students to understand the focal points in this field. Our results confirm that most students can be considered responsible digital citizens, and can also be classified according to various aspects of responsible digital citizenship.
