Fairy tales in the Czech literature for children and youth (1990–2010)

Pohádkové příběhy v české literatuře pro děti a mládež (1990–2010)

Author(s): Milena Šubrtová / Language(s): English,Czech / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Czech literature for children; Fairy tales; 1990s;

It is not possible to describe the position and the form of fairy tale in the Czech literature for children and youth of the past two decades without returning to transformations of the Czech literary scene immediately after 1989. The 1990s in the Czech literature for children and youth were a turbulent period influenced by social changes brought about byde–monopolization and fragmentation of publishing activities and also by the chance of open confrontation with the international book production featuring top as well as trivial and utilitarian works. The new national production of that period remained in the shadow of edition returns to the time–tested books from the golden collection of the Czech literature and also returns to the banned authors of the previous period. Quantitatively, catchy translations prevailed on the book market.

Reading Andrew Busza’s English Poems

Czytając angielskie wiersze Andrzeja Buszy

Author(s): Ross Labrie / Language(s): English,Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Andrzej Busza; English poetry; literary tradition;

Beginning on a personal note: how he enjoyed the friendship of both Andrew Busza and Bogdan Czaykowski for many years, Ross Labrie relates an occasion when Busza confessed to him some uneasiness about being a poet who is a cultural and linguistic hybrid. In response, Labrie suggested that being such a hybrid is probably the clearest indication of following a distinct path. Moreover, in his opinion, Busza’s English demonstrated a meticulous sensitivity to English idioms and rhythms, as well as a profound knowledge of the English literary tradition, acquired first as a student and then deepened as a teacher of literature. The focus of Labrie’s essay are poems by Busza in the volume Full Moon and Summer Solstice (Toronto, 2008), containing his own poems and those of Czaykowski in Polish and English versions. In addition to analyzing Busza’s poems, Labrie relates them to some major poetry movements in England and America. Like other twentieth‑century modernist poets, Busza is clearly indebted to William Carlos Williams and imagism. Although just as Wallace Stevens, he enriches the imagist technique to evoke deeper levels of perception, Busza does not share Stevens’ romanticism and implicit pantheism. Comparatively speaking, Busza’s poems are fundamentally rational. Though religious and metaphysical concerns are central to his work, unlike the romantics, he does not confer on the imagination mystical knowledge. He shares this restraint with the writings of such high modernists as Eliot and Pound. Busza also follows the practice of high modernists in their frequent recourse to symbol and allusion in an effort to enhance the authority of poetry. He is a poet steeped in the culture of Western civilization, though not attracted to the sophisticated mundanity of postmodernism and its ramifications (a stance some will deem quixotic), who has consistently taken the high ground.

Andrzej Busza’s Contribution to Conrad Scholarship

Andrzej Busza’s Contribution to Conrad Scholarship/ Zasługi Andrzeja Buszy dla conradystyki

Author(s): John G. Peters / Language(s): English,Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Andrzej Busza; Conradian studies; Polish contexts;

In the short, concise paper, the author considers Andrzej Busza’s contribution to the study of Conrad. He stresses the significance of Busza’s monograph Conrad’s Polish Literary Background and Some Illustrations of the Influence of Polish Literature on His Work, published in 1966. While early commentators, such as Gustav Morf, noted the impact of Conrad’s Polish heritage on his writing, Busza’s book offered the English‑speaking community of Conrad scholars a systematic account of the influence of Polish literature on his work together with convincing evidence and arguments concerning how Conrad worked from Polish literary sources. In later essays, Busza extended the Polish influence beyond literature, situating Conrad’s experience in Poland (and subsequently his writing) within contemporaneous Polish history. Along with his studies into Conrad’s Polish background and the influence of Polish literature, Busza commented on the broader European context of Conrad’s work, relating it to, among others, Dostoevsky and Flaubert.

Author(s): Maria Kalinowska / Language(s): English,Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Polish Philhellenism; Greek War of Independence 1821; 1821 Greek Revolution; Polish uprisings in the 19th century

The article outlines the historical background of Polish Philhellenism. Polish Philhellenes fighting in Greece most often took part in the struggle for Poland’s independence as well. One might say that Polish Philhellenes fighting for or supporting the Greek cause belonged to the mythical country of Romantic poetry; they were the “mad people” about whom the greatest Polish poet, Adam Mickiewicz, wrote that it was they, accused of madness and belligerence but faithful to their conscience, who supported the liberation cause, rather than “reasonable people”. In Poland, Philhellenism is understood in a broad sense, not being limited to direct involvement in the fighting. While it shared its fundamental ideas and beliefs with other European Philhellenisms, the Polish variant had its own distinct facet determined by Poland’s political situation in the 19th century, when it was deprived of sovereign statehood and subjugated by three partitioning powers (Russia, Prussia and Austria). The parallel drawn between the history of Greece and the history of Poland is the Polish version of the Romantic worship of Greece as a symbol of freedom. The 1821 Greek Revolution, thus, appears in Polish Romanticism in several dimensions: (1) a broad Philhellenic and Byronian perspective; (2) a universal context – through a connection with ancient models; (3) a mask for Polish independence aspirations and as a context for reflecting on the Polish uprisings.

Greek Lands and Polish Lands from the Perspective of 19th-Century European History

Ziemie greckie i ziemie polskie z perspektywy dziejów europejskich XIX wieku

Author(s): Jacek Knopek / Language(s): English,Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Polish Philhellenism; Polish diaspora in Greece; Polish-Greek relations

The article points to the history of Europe in the nineteenth century. The dominant role on the continent at that time was played by the powers that led to the annexation of both Polish and Greek lands. The Polish lands came under the rule of Austria, Prussia and Russia, while the Greek ones came under the rule of Turkey. In 1830, however, a Greek state was established. Gradually during this time, relations between the Poles and the Greeks began to be established, which resulted in the appearance of a small Polish diaspora in Athens and other Greek cities.

“Gazeta Krakowska” was the main Polish newspaper of the Free City of Cracow or the Republic of Cracow (1815–1846), with two editions per week. In this paper I analyse information concerning the first two years of the Greek Revolution (e.g. Ypsilantis's campaign in Moldavia and Wallachia, Philhellenes’ activity, the Battle of Peta), especially news circulation, direct and indirect sources of information, fake news and occasional, mainly pro-Greek commentaries from the chief editor Jan Maj.

Greek Folk Songs in Polish Translations: Changes in Poetic Reception in the 19th Century

Greckie pieśni ludowe w polskich przekładach – przemiany poetyckiej recepcji w XIX wieku

Author(s): Magdalena Kowalska / Language(s): English,Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: modern Greek folk songs; Polish translations from Greek; Polish Romanticism

The research was carried out with the goals of indicating the lines of poetic reception of modern Greek folk songs by Polish authors in the 19th century. The article presents Polish translations of these songs in the context of personages and education of their authors, their participation in the November Uprising – their work and life – and that fact that these works are mediated from the French translations. The author of the article argues that in the first wave of interest in Greek songs (1826–1830) the translations were related mainly to the Romantic fascination with folk character, and later, already in the 1830s, to the idea of the freedom struggle. Although some of the translated songs from this period were also related to Greek customs and myths, it was in the second half of the 19th century when new themes – love and death - were fully introduced. The analysed translations were made by Kazimierz Brodziński (1791–1835), Aleksander Chodźko (1804–1891), Józef Dunin-Borkowski (1809–1843), and Seweryna Duchińska (1816–1905), amongst others.

There is no question that anthropogenic processes have had planetary effects, in inter/intra- action with other processes and species, for as long as our species can be identified (a few tens of thousand years); and agriculture has been huge (a few thousand years). Of course, from the start the greatest planetary terraformers (and reformers) of all have been and still are bacteria and their kin, also in inter/intra-action of myriad kinds (including with people and their practices, technological and otherwise).2 The spread of seed-dispersing plants millions of years before human agriculture was a planet-changing development, and so were many other revolutionary evolutionary ecological developmental historical events.

Keywords: posthumanist performativity; posthumanist; matter;

Language has been granted too much power. The linguistic turn, the semiotic turn, the interpretative turn, the cultural turn: it seems that at every turn lately every “thing”—even materiality—is turned into a matter of language or some other form of cultural representation. The ubiquitous puns on “matter” do not, alas, mark a rethinking of the key concepts (materiality and signification) and the relationship between them. Rather, it seems to be symptomatic of the extent to which matters of “fact” (so to speak) have been replaced with matters of signification (no scare quotes here). Language matters. Discourse matters. Culture matters. There is an important sense in which the only thing that does not seem to matter anymore is matter.

Keywords: COVID-19; pandemic; posthuman economy; ecological;

The COVID-19 pandemic is a man-made disaster, caused by undue interference in the ecological balance and the lives of multiple species. Paradoxically, the contagion has resulted in increased use of technology and digital mediation, as well as enhanced hopes for vaccines and biomedical solutions. It has thereby intensified humans’ reliance on the very high-tech economy of cognitive capitalism that caused the problems in the first place. This combination of ambivalent elements in relation to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Sixth Extinction is the trademark of the posthuman condition.
