Summary/Abstract: This article explores specific criteria leading to the identification of applicable text typologies in legal translation through a retrospective upon conventions (tradition) and continuous professional development (modernity). What sort of criteria do we choose in order to establish the applicable text typologies in legal translation? How can we identify the effectiveness of those criteria and how they could be embedded in a methodological approach? Which are the challenges we are faced with? Starting from this point, this study focusses on an analysis regarding legal and linguistic features used in order to set up appropriate text typologies in the legal translation field and to create an inventory of theoretical and practical knowledge specific to the research field. This article shows the interest of the author in the legal translation field via a particular context, legal and linguistic classification of specific text typologies, an interest highlighted in terms of thematic knowledge, the applicability of the illustrated and demonstrated criteria and new directions of the approach outlined.
