Summary/Abstract: Literature as a school subject – compared to other subjects – receives special attention from both society and politics, be it primary or secondary school. The special attention paid to the subject is justified, the paper also covers this, but it rather wishes to discover, based on the research results of recent years, what characterizes the present generation in the schools, and in light of this what the conditions are for effective literature education. After taking stock of these possibilities, it provides a brief overview of the curricula currently in force in Romania, Slovakia, Serbia and Hungary, more precisely, of what extent they allow for effective teaching / learning in the 21st century.
