Summary/Abstract: That the teaching of Hungarian language and literature for native speakers has been experiencing a crisis for decades, is not only an indisputable fact which has also become evident due to the PISA surveys, but is a reality we experience every day or have already experienced as teachers or students/pupils, and possibly as parents. Although many experts have been thinking of a solution and have been organising conferences and discussions for decades, nobody has come up with a solution to the problem so far. Time is running up and we cannot only sit and wait for a solution from above, since our students/pupils are getting more and more distanced from and disinterested in the literature we are supposed to teach them according to the curriculum. Almost all the parties involved in the question agree on the necessity of a radical change in the curriculum. The present study is dealing only with one segment within the possible way of this change: with the teaching of popular literature within the regular literature classes at grammar schools.
