The Cultural Institution as a Source of Suffering: the Autoethnography of Structural Vio-lence

Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to place the phenomenon of economic, psychological and physical vio-lence in cultural institutions in a broader, systemic context. Based on their long-term experience and referring to Bronisław Malinowski’s institutional theory of culture, the authors put forward a thesis about the structural character of violence present in Polish cultural institutions. It starts in the fi-nancing system, and then translates into other aspects of the institution’s functioning. Recognizing this fact allows us to ask what the function of public theater in contemporary Poland is.
