Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to trade unions in Polish artistic institutions and professions connected with the stage in the interwar and contemporary periods. The authors discuss the specificity, scope of activity, influence on theatrical life and public perception of trade union organizations, while point-ing out differences between the first trade unions and those operating today. Trade union organiza-tions of the early 20th century were communitarian in character; using press organs, they integrated various creative circles, popularized their output and cared for the quality of the art by rating artists. They supported artists socially and defended their rights on the art market. The position of contem-porary trade unions is not so influential. At least in the public perception, they are not viewed as organizations with significant reach. Although trade union organizations are still not widely popu-lar, it seems that in recent years grassroots initiatives are experiencing a revival, as evidenced by the emergence of increasingly more industry trade unions.
