Summary/Abstract: Institutional critique, popularized in the United States and Western Europe in the 1960s, is the heir to equality discourse, which has been a key inspiration for the work of philosophers, social re-searchers, and artists since the French Revolution. However, due to the hopes that are attached to it, contemporary institutional criticism is in a unique position. Its future depends on the fulfillment of several conditions: the transformation of institutions and the works they present; the language through which institutions communicate with their environment; the cooperation of curators and artists with NGOs; their alliance with academic practice; and the activity of professionals, transfer-ring their competencies to new curatorial, managerial and critical practices.
