Linguistic profiles of the concept of national pride in contemporary weeklies

Summary/Abstract: This text is dedicated to the reconstruction of the linguistic picture of national pridein contemporary weeklies. For this purpose, the cognitive profiling method was used.As a result, two different profiles – historical and psychological – have been distinguished.Within the historical profile, connected with a conservative point of view, the historicalfoundations of pride are exposed: the uniqueness of the Polish nation and its history,courage and the sacrifice of ancestors. The community-forming character of national prideand its potency to influence history are underlined as well, as the need to actively shapeit as an essential attribute of the nation. The psychological profile associated with theliberal point of view is connected with a different perspective. National pride is presentedas a threatening feeling, arising from national complexes and state weakness that leadsto a groundless sense of superiority and dangerous nationalism.
