Establishment of RTVS: On the Fast and Unplanned Merger of Slovak Television and Slovak Radio

Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the establishment of Radio and Television Slovakia and offers a view on the social and political background in which the process of merging the Slovak Television and Slovak Radio began. In detail it addresses the insight into the situation in which the Slovak Television appeared before 2011 as well as the activities of its last management. In addition to the discussed political and professional debate in this work, it also presents the legislative process that led to one of the most fundamental changes in the Slovak media environment after 1989 in order to understand the reasons why such a fundamental and unplanned change was so widely and quickly accepted. In the final part of the paper, the open issues are pointed out, mainly financing which have had an impact on the present RTVS. These challenges, if not resolved, will also affect its further development. The paper has a documentary and report character and is based on the relevant sources and official documents.
