Summary/Abstract: The article shows the nationalisation actions after the Second World War undertaken by the communist authorities towards the printing works in the Sandomierz area. They covered three entities: Stanisława Nowacka’s “Grafika” printing house, Czesław Cyrkler’s “Nowoczesna” printing house, and the Diocesan Graphic and Printing Works owned by the local seminary. The legal basis for the nationalisation measures was the Act of January 3, 1946, on taking over the fundamental branches of the national economy for state ownership. The initiatives aiming at nationalising Sandomierz graphic arts companies were of various character and course. This article aims at presenting the methods and ways in which both sides of the conflict of interests acted. The state authorities wanted to take over the printing houses as soon as possible, while the original owners wanted to delay or stop the processes. The description of the course of the nationalisation of three printing houses in Sandomierz was prepared as a result of an archival query. The key source material on this subject is the legacy of the Central Commission for Nationalisation of Enterprises deposited in the Archiwum Akt Nowych (Central Archives of Modern Records) in Warsaw. It was supplemented by documentation gathered in the State Archive in Kielce and its branch in Sandomierz, as well as in the Sandomierz Diocese Archive and the Diocesan Library in Sandomierz. The archival materials clearly prove that the state authorities at all costs endeavoured to take over the described printing works. These actions had the desired effect in the case of the „Grafika” and „Nowoczesna” printing houses. However, after several years of administrative proceedings, the Diocesan Graphic and Printing Works remained the church property. This article is a minor contribution to the research on the history of Polish industry after the Second World War.
