Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the work and especially the extensive research activity of the late Germanist Mihai Isbășescu (1915-1998). As a well-known professor at the University of Bucharest, he is one of the greatest Romanian Germanists, having had a lively and varied activity as a literary historian, lexicographer and translator. In this article we analyze his lexicographical works, as they served as a pattern for many later bilingual dictionaries. The Romanian readership also owes him the access to many literary works which Isbășescu translated. As such, he is regarded as a mediator between the German and Romanian languages and – generalizing – cultures.
