Summary/Abstract: The paper proposes an analysis of the State–Church relations in the second half of the XIXth century, starting from a case study aimed at the diplomatic negotiations of the Romanian Legation of Constantinople with the Ecumenical Patriarchate for preserving the church autonomy of the Romanian hermitage of Prodromu on Mount Athos, in the years 1870-1890. The canonical-administrative aspects of church life and state political reasons are analyzed in the context of the emergence of the modern Romanian national state undertaking the role of protector of the Romanian Orthodox Church, thereby consolidating and legitimizing its role. The diplomatic correspondence between the Ministry of Exterior, Ministry of Cults, the Romanian Legation of Constantinople, the General Consulate of Thessaloniki, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Wallachia Metropolis, and the Prodromu Hermitage shows the essential role of Romanian diplomatic actions on this theme.
