Summary/Abstract: At the end of XIXth Century and the beginning of the XXth Century, the level of illiteracy in Romania was one of the highest in Europe, although Romania was one of the first states in Europe that legislated, through the Public Education Law from 1864, the compulsory primary education. In order to eradicate illiteracy, which affected negative the modernization of the Romanian society, Spiru Haret created the schools for adults, organized depending on the population level of education (primary schools courses, free courses, schools for apprentices), helping to decreme illiterancy. This study presents the evolvement of teachers from Bacau City in organizing and functioning of the schools for adults. Researching the documents gives us the possibility to know this apostolate activity to which the teachers and educators from Bacau, through their activity have contributed to the fight against illiteracy and ignorance, and have helped to elevate the common man materially and moraly.
