Summary/Abstract: A ritual pit (bothros) was unearthed during rescue excavations in the CoŃofeni settlement of Sebes-Râpa Rosie (Alba County). Ceramics and a piece of red ochre were found in the pit, as well as an offering of grinding stones placed face up at the mouth of the pit. A carved stone head appeared in the middle of the pit, which was undoubtedly the most interesting find. The rock is of local origins and only the eyes and nostrils are visible on it. The head is extremely well polished above the eyes, which might suggest it had also been used as a grinding stone. The style of the sculpture greatly resembles that of CoŃofeni anthropomorphic figurines. The bothros belongs to a CoŃofeni III settlement. The author has analyzed other CoŃofeni cult pits (Boiu, Seusa, Turia) and has noticed how few they are, compared to the large number of Cotofeni settlements discovered. Most finds of Cotofeni anthropomorphic figurines and ritual pits are in Transylvania. This proves once more that the Cotofeni culture is restricted to the Transylvanian area.
