Summary/Abstract: The right to life, a fundamental right, closely linked to many other human rights, is proclaimed both in national law and in multiple international documents. However, some questions are sometimes raised as to the extent to which the protection of the right to life must be exercised and, in particular, as to the recognition of the right to death by euthanasia, which takes the form of the criminal act of provoking, as due to the feeling of compassion, the death of a person. In addition to the ethical and legal considerations involved in euthanasia, this extremely sensitive issue has repeatedly been brought to the attention of the European Court of Human Rights, with this article proposing a brief analysis of its jurisprudence on this controversial subject that often shakes moral, philosophical, religious and even legal systems.
