Summary/Abstract: This article examines qualities and characteristics of British response to separatist terrorism in Northern Ireland with respect to law enforcement bodies and counter-terrorist measures in the period before 2001. It focuses on both its operational anti-terrorist effectiveness, namely the development of specialised anti-terrorist units, measures and procedures, and democratic acceptability, more concretely on questionable measures going directly against the basic principles of the rule of law. The study concludes that in the given context Britain despite the lack of democratic credibility of some anti-terrorist activities developed a complex and relatively successful anti-terrorist system.
