Summary/Abstract: The study attempts to provide insights on the concrete aspects of the organization and development of the April 1, 1940 march of several thousand Bukovinians, primarily Romanians, towards the Soviet-Romanian border. According to statements of some Ukrainian authors that have been analyzed, the event itself, as well as the hundreds of victims in Poiana Varnita, was the result of the activity of the Romanian intelligence services. The author shows that between July 1940 and June 1941, numerous attempts to illegally cross the Soviet-Romanian border took place, some of which left many dead and injured. While the massacre of Lunca of February 6–7, 1941, was by far the bloodiest by the number of people killed by the Soviet border guards, the events of April 1, 1941, are the biggest anti-Soviet demonstrations in Bessarabia and the north of Bukovina recorded in the 40s of the XX century.
