Summary/Abstract: Apart from physical changes coming with old age, gerontology also considers social and cultural factors of ageing. The prevalence of chronic diseases grows among the elderly and the middle-aged, women included. For this reason, the consideration of the role of changes in lifestyle is very important. The goal of this paper is to de- scribe risk factors relevant to the prevention of the most common massive non-conta- gious diseases in women. Age, sex, and inheritance are important for many illnesses, but they cannot be influenced so they represent immutable risk factors. More inter- esting to social medicine are changeable risk factors, those that can be affected through prevention. Particular emphasis has been given to smoking, consumption of alcohol, nutrition, and psychosocial factors. The change of lifestyle may influence many risk factors and related chronic diseases, which is important for prevention. Primary prevention implies adoption of a healthy lifestyle, which best controls risk factors.
