Summary/Abstract: In recent decades, the world has seen rapid population growth, hindering eco- nomic growth and hampering advances in education, development, and health. Out of almost 6 billion people in the world towards the end of 20th century, 20% lived in de- veloped industrial countries, and 80% in undeveloped countries. Dramatic decrease in birthrates, amounting to 34% in Serbia proper and 35% in Vojvodina – which is below the levels needed for sheer regeneration of the popula- tion, shows that the demographic situation in our country is complex, burdened with numerous, often mutually conflicting, problems, with long-term negative conse- quences. Family planning is a historical category, found in human communities from its earliest days to the present time. The goals of family planning are to regulate both individual fertility and the fertility of entire communities. Regulation of fertility is important for a community as much as the regulation of morbidity and mortality are. If used, family planning methods reduce maternal mortality, prevent undesired or highly risky pregnancies, reduce the need for (in)secure abortion and protect the population from sexually transmitted diseases. As in most countries, in our country, too, a family planning program has been defined as an instrument of state population policy. It was passed in 1998 under the heading Information on Family Planning. The program promotes reproductive health, listing the measures and activities that should support changes in the attitude and be- havior of the population.
