Summary/Abstract: This article’s ultimate goal is to present the linguistic realizations of a particular speech act, namely the expression of gratitude, in the Bulgarian and the Romanian languages. In this connection, the formulas of speech etiquette Благодаря and Mulțumesc were appraised in their independent use, as well as in combination with various intensifiers (these are elements of the utterance, which increase its illocutionary force) – dative pronouns, forms of address, adverbs, interjections, explication of the reason for expression of gratitude, etc. This has made it possible to outline the similarities and differences in the patterns of gratitude expression in the two languages.Another essential tool for the attainment of the above-mentioned goal is the understanding of gratitude as a complex speech act, namely a dialogical unity, which involves not only the addresser’s remark, but also the verbal response of the addressee, i.е. his or her reply. It is precisely the replies to instances of expressed gratitude that reveal the most striking differences between the Bulgarian and the Romanian languages. On the basis of these differences, certain conclusions have been drawn for the manifestations of positive and negative politeness in Bulgarian and Romanian cultures.
