Summary/Abstract: At present, there is an increasing emphasis on the knowledge of foreign languages and therefore their teaching is becoming a priority in the field of education. In communication-oriented teaching, working with authentic materials should play an important role and through them learners should get as close as possible to real communication situations. One of the most accessible sources of authentic materials are songs (both audio and audiovisual). The purpose of this article is to provide, based on my own teaching experience as a lecturer, motivating material for the use of songs in the teaching of Slovak as a foreign language. Songs are an effective tool not only for the development of language skills, but also for intercultural dialogue. Last but not least, they are an appropriate motivational tool.
