Summary/Abstract: The article presents the idea of identity according to Miłosz in the light of his gnostic analyses of the works by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and the writings of Tadeusz Kroński. The thesis of the article affirms that the birth of 20th century ideologies, as perceived by Miłosz, is the result of the secularization of Christianity. The rise of scientism has caused withering of religious imagination and faith and their replacement by new religions: religious gnosis and ideology. The author of the article argues that for Miłosz the crucial one was religious gnosis, constituting an intermediate agent between religion and ideology. In the further part of the article the author argues that the analysis of Kroński carried out by Miłosz is gnostic in its character. The reconstruction of Miłosz reveals implicite the philosophical system of Kroński to be one of historic gnosis. Reading of „Family Europe” from the angle of „The Land of Ulro” allows to perceive the figure of Kroński employed in the discussion of Dostoyevsky’s works and his presence in later essays by Miłosz.
