O.W.M. in the Guides of the Emigrant Miłosz

Summary/Abstract: The article presents meetings between Czesław Miłosz and his relative Oskar Władysław Miłosz. It shows the zagarist’s fascination with prophetic visions of a cousin from Czerea. It also highlights the snobbish premises of this fascination. The author develops the theory that, during his emigration, Czesław Miłosz perceived in this cousin a prefiguration of his own fate. That he saw the extent of his existential isolation, his historical and metaphysical disinheritance. Supporting the theory of a finding a common fate between the two poets, the article extricates from the Nobel Prize winner’s attitude the principle of the Schopenhauerian compassion encompassing O. W. M.’s fate. It shows that, looking empathetically at his long-departed relative, the living poet finds the existential sense of the foreignness of the surrounding world – including in his suicide attempts. Among the positive aspects of Oskar Miłosz’s isolation, the text enumerates his capacity for a deep religious life, his cognitive autonomy, the rejection of a mechanistic conception of man, an eschatological life, and, most of all, a bold prophesying.
