Summary/Abstract: Polycentricity and complexity of Danilo Kiš’s (1935-1989) identity which is a hybrid produced by crossing two different family lines: the Hungarian Jewish father, the mother from Montenegro, pulls the decryption of some contradictory codes. Double marginally, a Jewish-Hungarian and Yugoslavian heritage, his place within a certain cultural community, linguistic plurality and the courage to speak out in-between spaces of different cultures in many ways determined Kiš’s artistic profile. His artistic believes touched the complex perspective of the border area, the representations of ethnicity, socio-political and historical reality and poured them into an expression of protest or criticism. By his birth he was already destined to a cultural unity, multilingualism and multi-ethnic differences that are important elements for the identity of the Vojvodina region where Kiš has his own origins. Although he was situated between several languages, he remained faithful to the Serbian language. In the case of Danilo Kiš’s identity, we took into account the constructivist conception of fragmented identity of Stuart Hall, according to which the individual has a number of conflicting and unresolved identities, based on culture, ethnicity, religion, nationality, etc. Due to his multiple affiliation, Kiš still resist to the cultural instability resulting there from.
