Summary/Abstract: According to data provided by UN, we are witnessing a significant increase in the percentage of elderly persons worldwide. In 2000 the global, elderly population was representing about 10% and the percentage increased up to 15% in 2008. In Europe, it is estimated that by 2050 this percentage will reach 25%. In Europe, it is estimated that the percentage of people aged over 60 will double, from 20% in 2000 to 37% in 2050. Ageing trend of population is joined by a second defining phenomenon for XXI century, urbanization. Increasing life expectancy and urbanization represent reference points for society development in the past century. Population and society ageing constitutes a paradigm shift for architecture. The concept of Sustainable Community is redefined in this context as a premise in architecture design that is intended to it, by appeal to the concept of Age Friendly Community. Age Friendly Community represents a new concept that integrates other existing concepts: Smart Growth, Healthy Communities, New Urbanism, Universal Design, Child Friendly Communities, LEED ND, WHO Safe Communities, Heat Resilient Communities, Active Living Communities. The article details the characteristics of sustainable community that are important for architecture in the context of the challenges the ageing of society brings on many levels. The architecture of the future can generate Sustainable Age Friendly Communities. It can speak about XXI century architecture as an intergenerational sustainable architecture.
