Summary/Abstract: The article provides an analysis of the most intense armed conflicts in Africa and the Middle East in 2021. These conflicts have traditionally taken place in the region of the enlarged Middle East (Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen) and Africa (from the Sahel, through Ethiopia, to Somalia). The article discusses the ending of the war in Afghanistan and of the internationalized armed conflict in Syria, which slowly died down. In contrast, the wars in Yemen, Ethiopia, Sahel, and Somalia intensified. The authors analyse the dynamics of these major armed conflicts, together with their humanitarian consequences. The article is a continuation of the Strategic Yearbook recurring series and it focuses on analyzing events and factors influencing the dynamics of the most intense conflicts in 2021.
