Some Notes on the Works of Theophylact of Ohrid

Summary/Abstract: When preparing part of the works of Theophylact of Ohrid for inclusion in the GIBI series – vol. 9, Part 2, a number of shortcomings were found in the previous translations and publications of these sources which are important for the history of Bulgaria. Part of the emendations which are directly related to certain facts in Bulgaria’s history, to the discovery of some new names and to filling in some blanks in the older translations are offered in the present study so that they could quickly be put in scientific usage. Special attention is paid to the letters of Theophylact of Ohrid and “The lives of the 15 Martyrs of Tiberiopolis” and “The Life of Clement of Ohrid” he wrote. Theophvlact’s letters treated in the article are as follows: a) Finetis Collection: Nos. 8, 14, 19, 20; b) Meursius’ Collection: Nos. 1, 4, 5, 6, 9, 20, 24, 26, 27. 29. 30. 33, 35, 37, 41, 49, 56, 71, 73; c) Lamius’ Collection: Nos. 1, 3, 7, 8. 9, 12, 13. 15, 18, 20. 29, 30, 32. As to “The Lives of the 15 Martyrs of Tiberiopolis”, some emendations and additions have been made to Chapters 3, 5, 8, 17, 31, 32, 33, 34, 37, 42. The following paragraphs in “The Life of Clement of Ohrid” have been emendated and complemented: 6, 8, 14, 24, 44, 53, 62, 67.
