Summary/Abstract: In this comparative study, I shall discuss William Shakespeare’s “Coriolanus” and Henrik Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People”. The focus will be placed on the rift between the individual and the community, or between the ‘right’ of the one vs the ‘might’ of the many. Notwitstanding the different contexts, this is a conflict that in both plays generates a strong sense of social satire, followed by the unavoidable tragedy of the alienated individual.
