Summary/Abstract: The paper studies the language of surprise in English on a corpus built from the internet site https://sentence.yourdictionary.com/surprise and presents the metonymies and metaphors that may complete Kövecses’s (2000, 2015) findings. The results prove that surprise is a prototypical emotion; however, it has certain non-prototypical peculiarities.
