Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with István Domonkos’s young adult novel Via Italia published in 1970. There have been very few analyses of this novel, a pivotal work in the author’s opus. This is, in fact, also true of Domonkos’s literature for children. The author of this paper seeks to find the answer to the question of what brings about the freshness of this piece of work even now, fifty years after its original publication. The analysis takes into account the characteristic locations (linguistic and physical spaces), layers, and characters of the work. It also tries to capture Domonkos’s attitude to life, which also characterizes his children’s poems (Tessék engem megdi- csérni [Please Praise Me]), and makes both them and the novel true crossover works which surpass generational boundaries.
