Summary/Abstract: The subject of the primacy of the Bishop of Rome is one of important and up-to-date theological issues. It is particularly significant in the sphere of ecumenism. The primacy of Peter and his followers can be presented with reference to the mystery of the Church as a divine-human reality, whose basic quality is unity. The primacy of the Bishop of Rome by the will of Jesus Christ is a necessary service aimed at ecclesiastic unity. Fulfilling this aim requires that it is linked with an authority and a specific jurisdictional power. The patriarchal structure of the Church does not impede its collegial structure.
