Summary/Abstract: The divine-human genesis and nature of the Church is presently questioned ever more often. The religious faith in the church is being contested. The supernatural elements of its structure are rejected; it is merely perceived as an institution, an organized community and mostly identified with its clergy. Cardinal C. M. Martini, the long-standing Archbishop of Milan, a prominent Bible scholar, thinker and tireless man of God, presents the Church in personal categories, as a community of persons gathered around Jesus Christ. He emphasizes its apostolic and Marian character. The Church was founded on the will of Jesus Christ, for community with God and fellow believers. The disciples gave shape to its basic structures and forms of existence. Mary, the Mother of the Saviour, is an “icon”, as well as the ideal of a fulfilling life for every Christian and the whole Church community.
