Modernization of energy production in Lower Silesia post 1989

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the history of energy production in Lower Silesia against the background of the transition in the Polish economy post 1989. Based on archive documentation from the Ministry of Energy and from energy companies, the article presents the stages in the restructurization, commercialization and privatization of the energy industry and the influence of those processes on the state of energy production in Lower Silesia. Organizational and technological changes, as well as changes in national and EU law, were analyzed. This has allowed for a complete presentation of the restructurization of the energy production sector in Lower Silesia, the goal of which was its adaptation to operating within the framework of a free-market economy, EU competition and the requirements of environmental protection legislation.
