Summary/Abstract: The article discusses cultural differences in representations and preferred ways of achievement of success and happiness. These differences appear to be strongly determined by the self-construal as defined by H. R.Markus &S. Kitayama. We first describe the independent and interdependent self-construal in relation to cultures that endorse them, then present the predominant tendencies and forms of achieving success and happiness in individualistic and collectivistic cultures. In the end, we sketch the consequences for general life satisfaction.
