Summary/Abstract: The article analyses Alfred Kubin’s novel Die andere Seite (The Other Side) with specificconsideration of Antoni Kępiński’s theories on melancholia and schizophrenia. Gromekdraws attention to the similarities of definitions between these two categories usedin both psychiatric and humanistic discourse, indicating to the moments when theboundary between melancholic and schizophrenic writing becomes blurred. The startingpoint of the text is the question whether we can analyze literary texts as testimoniesto authors’ illnesses or, instead, seek to preserve meaning in literary and existential terms.
