Summary/Abstract: A group of Russian icons owned by the National Museum of Union Alba Iulia were investigated and restored within the RICONTRANS project “Visual Culture, Piety and Propaganda: Transfer and Reception of Russian Religious Art in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean (16th to early 20th century)”, due to a fruitful collaboration between the restorer and the chemists. The main goal of the scientific research of the icons performed within the project was, on the one hand, to develop a suitable restoration methodology and, on the other hand, to unveil the age and provenance of the icons and to trace some specific technical elements that may help understand the transfer and reception of Russian art in Transylvania. This article aims to present the conservation-restoration methodology applied to the Russian icon of “Jesus Christ the Almighty”, inv. no. 2026/L/694-M, the conservation challenges, as well as the results of the scientific investigation, that will elucidate the age of the icon and its peculiarities of technique.
