The Drăgoșești Family and Peri Monastery’s Transition to the Stavropegial Rank under the Jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople – betwixt Political and Ecclesiastical Strategy

Summary/Abstract: This year (2021) we celebrate the 630th anniversary of the Peri monastery’s transition to the stavropegial rank under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople (13 August 1391). The historical and spiritual significance of the Peri monastery was by and large determined by its special rank and access to the Byzantine ecclesiastical and civil authorities. This presentation aims to historically recontextualize the area of Maramures and to highlight its ecclesiastic and political horizons at the end of the 14th century, the time of the acquisition of its new ecclesiastical status. It endeavours to offer new insights regarding the strategies that lead to the new status. A critical reassessment of the role of the Dragoșești family in this transition is given special attention in this presentation.
