Summary/Abstract: From the point of view of the history of Polish language lexical units form interesting scientific material due to the phenomenon of motivation and its different levels. The subject of the description is a subgroup of units with lexical motivation which is at present unclear. The scientific material comprises the units with isolated components which cannot be identified with any lexem used in contemporary Polish. Some of such units are: "przepaść z kretesem", "mieć kuku na muniu", "leżeć odłogiem", "złapać wilka". The aim of the paper is to explain the motivation of these units using historical dictionaries of Polish language and first of all to show the doubts and problems faced by scientist while interpreting dictionary data.
