On syntactic features of {czystej wody} ‘of the first water’

Summary/Abstract: The article provides a preliminary syntactic analysis of one unit of language – {ktoś, coś czystej wody} – from the point of view of its grammatical categorisation as an adjective. The description shows that syntactic-lexical combinability of the unit is limited. The expression is not determined by other adjectives, it doesn’t combine with adverbs, but it can be “commented” by a group of particles. The typical contexts in which the expression occurs are: {ktoś, coś to czystej wody X / X czystej wody; ktoś, coś jest X-em czystej wody / czystej wody X-em}. It fills the predicative position, but only together with a noun. The expression functions primarily as the rhematic part in the thematic-rhematic structure of sentences. Syntactic analysis shows that the expression is not in the center of the class of adjectives, it is not a typical representative of it. The solution of the problem of whether the unit czystej wody belongs to adjectives depends also on the answer to the question of its location – on the object level or the metatextual level of language.
