Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the question of the form of the sacrament of baptism and its defects. It also discusses the consequences of the invalid celebration of the sacrament of baptism. The basic starting point is the dubium raised to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith whether the baptism given in trinitarian form in the fi rst-person plural is valid, to which the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith replied that these baptisms are invalid and must be performed again in absolute form. In the United States, baptism videos revealed two young men who did not received the sacrament because of the permanent deacons who celebrated the sacrament of baptism and used the fi rst-person plural form. The article presents the history of these cases, including a comparison of their solutions at the level of individual dioceses and draws attention to problematic points. It also addresses the issue of the validity of the sacrament of ordination and provides an overview of the expert discussion on the validity of the sacrament of baptism in the United States.
