Summary/Abstract: The article is a reconstruction of two different modes of understanding violence: the mode of force and that of domination. This reconstruction is based on analysis of modern interpretations of The Iliad (Simone Weil) and The Odyssey (Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer). Further, these two interpretations offer paradigmatic descriptions of modern philosophical discourses of violence. The essay is rooted in the Ricouerian understanding of the philosophy of reflection as a mode of thinking mediated through interpretation of symbols and myths. The concept of the symbol as a structure with a double sense, which requires interpretation, allows for comprehension of old myths as points of departure for an understanding of the present human condition.
