Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we focus on the question of how the expansion of science affects the functioning of higher education. Accordingly, the first introductory section of the paper describes the quantitative and qualitative changes that science has undergone and the extent to which this has altered the internal organisation of the scientific sphere. Two effects of expansion are then discussed in more detail. First, the differentiation and tensions in the functions of research are described. Within this conceptual framework, we can distinguish six different social roles of research. One of the best examples of the potential tensions between these is the conflict between a view of research that sees it as a common feature of the academic profession and one that emphasises the measurement of performance and the ranking of researchers. Linked to this source of tension is the other important effect of expansion, the spread and institutionalisation of a ‚publish or perish’ culture. In the concluding part of the paper, we delineate trends for the future of research.
