The anger in Ps. 4:4 (5), an inspired translation by the Septuagint

Summary/Abstract: The present research tries to determine the real meaning of the phrase in Ps.4:4 (5), ὀργίζεσθε καὶ μὴ ἁμαρτάνετε, from the traditional Orthodox standpoint, relying on the authority of the Septuagint, but also taking into consideration the Masoretic lection as well. The 1957 revision of the Romanian Synodal Psalter replaced here ‘and’ with ‘but’, according to the interpretation of the phrase in Ephesians 4:26, as if a good anger were replaced with a bad anger – in fact for both of them there are plenty of Patristic (and biblical) arguments. However, the analysis of the correspondence between Greek and Hebraic verbs used here shows a weak correspondence between ὀργίζομαι and ”ragaz” (רגז) so that the anger in the Septuagint, either good or bad, rather resulted from a translator’s intervention in the text, which was subsequently validated and adopted by both Jewish and Christians traditions, as part of the generic concept of Greek Scriptures.
