Summary/Abstract: This article presents the conception of compound nouns formation (it means nouns in the context of professional specialization). The assumptions are studied on a level of discourse but not on a level of language system. The following Polish and French assumptions are discussed briefly (e.g. société conjugale – małżeńska wspólność majątkowa bien commun – dobro wspólne; Hodegetria lub Hodigitria; opinion publique – opinia publiczna; angioplastie – plastyka naczyniowa lub angioplastyka). These examples show that in translations of compound nouns it is necessary to take into consideration not only loan translations (calques of formal structure) but above all the context of the specialist discourse as well as the terminology of the target language.
