Summary/Abstract: The article addresses selected aspects of the programme statement of the new President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. While it welcomes the statement that the EU's main objective remains the creation of a social Europe, it suggests that this vision often runs counter to the reality that favours competition and flexibility. The article points out, for example, contradictions in EU monetary and budgetary policy, especially with concern to Euro area members. It also criticises the lack of vision of taxation policy in the EU, particularly with respect to tax havens.
