Summary/Abstract: The scientific and technical discourse proposes complex reasoning, assuming a logical and explicit exposition of arguments, to convince the reader of the innovation and originality of the work presented by the author. Texts written in specialized French – especially in the field of engineering – explain, justify, synthesize, resume certain information to formulate one or more conclusions, concede and dispute the expected consequences, all this by clear and indisputable reasoning from a scientific point of view. This article aims to analyze certain linguistic means, namely logical connectors, frequently used to build a solid and rigorous, yet rich and nuanced argument. The article will focus on a single aspect of argumentation: the distinction between justification and explanation, followed by the presentation of the markers with justifying value, those with explanatory value or those which can be sometimes justifying, sometimes explanatory, depending on the context. The aim of this paper is to achieve a descriptive approach to the linguistic means specific to argumentation in writings using scientific and technical French.
