Summary/Abstract: The Château de Maisons, great work of classical architecture, was a castle intended to host the king. To receive this great monarch, René de Longueil, the owner of the land, who built this castle starting from 1635, knew full well that the king always traveled accompanied by part of the aristocracy of the royal court. In order to be able to accommodate all his guests, he asked François Mansart, his architect, to develop additional spaces outside the large apartments of his monumental residence so that his guests could spend the night there if necessary and to arrange service spaces so that the work of domestic workers becomes as efficient as possible. These parts of the castle that were used to host a few historical characters were more modest than the larges apartments planned for the owners of the place and the king but furnished with great taste. In the 17th century, various aristocrats from the court of Versailles spent a night at the Château de Maisons with King Louis XIV. Voltaire and General La Fayette also stayed in these hidden parts of the beautiful Longueil residence during the 18th century.
